New SBS Block and DJ Blocks

To keep from pulling my hair out, I'm breaking from the Blue Ridge Beauty.  Today I'm paper piecing and just finished this Sylvia's Bridal Sampler block.

This one is Duck and Ducklings and I really had fun piecing it.

I have also paper pieced 2 new Dear Jane blocks, not today, a couple weeks ago.

 I-1 Ralph and Nelda's Wedding

I-8 Pete's Paintbox

The color on this one ran a little.  I will probably make a new one after I wash the material.  I think I put to much spray on it.

Update on Design Wall

What a difference a turn will make!  No I know why Bonnie said to start in the center and work your way out.

If you plan on making a quilt like this one, be very careful how you lay out the blocks.  They can drive you crazy!  I pray that I can get the second half laid out correctly but first I have to make sure I label these blocks and rows so I won't get lost in the process.

Life is a journey, roll down the window and enjoy the breeze! Have a blessed day!

My Design Wall

Today I want to share with you what is on my design wall.  Half of my Blue Ridge Beauty quilt.   This quilt has 16 rows with 14 blocks in each row.  My wall is not big enough to hold all of it so I'm laying it out in sections.  I will be labeling each row in order to keep it together.

I have made several of her quilts and love the way she works with scraps.  I am also working on her latest mystery Orca Bay.  I am printing the steps when the come out, and testing the colors I have before I go all out with the pieces.  If you like scrap quilts and working with small pieces give her patterns a try.  They take a while to put together but the finished quilt is fantastic.
UPDATE  at 4:09 pm   I just came in from running errands and realized I have several blocks laid out incorrectly.  I am fixing the problem and will post a new and corrected picture later.

Tuesday Treasure

This week I'm sharing Tuesday Treasure with Melody from Australia.  Today my treasure is this cute little piece my sister-in-law gave me.

There is a slot cut in the bottom where a small ball of yarn is.  I don't think the scissors are original but I'm not sure because I have never seen another one like it.  It sits on my window sill in my studio where I keep other items like jars of buttons.  Check out the link to see what other treasures are out there.

My Little Helper

As we all know, this time of year is very busy.  I finally found a day when I could work in my studio and was able to get a lot accomplished, even though I have nothing to show for it.  But, I did take time to capture a couple of pictures of Cotton, my little helper.
I'm not sure exactly what kind of help he was trying to do.  I believe he wanted to clean out the pot of dried leaves or maybe a little extra dirt.

He seemed to have a lot of fun and actually did not make a big mess.  He found a couple of rocks that I had in the dirt and pushed one out on the floor and played with it until he got tired and decided to take a nap.  Maybe next post I will have some work completed worth showing but for now, have a great day and enjoy the little helpers in your life.

A Day to Remember

As many of you know, besides quilting, I am an artist.  Today, I finished my first commissioned piece that I have titled "A Day to Remember".

This piece has been a great experience for me.  I can't begin to tell you how much I have learned from working with someone that is willing to have your work hang in their home.  I don't know that I will ever get the chance to do other commission work, but I am very excited about the outcome of this one.

Now, that this one is finally complete, except for the clear glazing which will protect it, I can work on my other pieces that I have sitting in my studio.  So, stay tuned for new works coming soon.

Tuesday Treasure

Today I will not be linking to Melody for Tuesday Treasure.  One of her close friends lost their son at the age of 27.  When I read her post she ask that everyone tell your family that you love them because life is not predictable and we never know what will happen.  I immediately thought of the plane crash on Thanksgiving day, in Arizona, that took the lives of 6 people. A father and his 3 children were among the 6.  When tragedies like this happen the first thing we do is ask why.  We will never get the answer to that question but we can be comforted by the thought that God will take care of us and our families.

Ricky and I say we love each other everyday, especially when one leaves to go somewhere.   So my Tuesday Treasure is a prayer that all who are hurting, due to any kind of situation, will find comfort in Gods love.

Dear Jane and Sylvia's Bridal Sampler

Well, this week I have been busy adding new pages to my blog.  I decided to post pictures of my blocks for the Dear Jane Quilt and Sylvia's Bridal Sampler Quilt.  You can read a little about each quilt and see the photos by following the tabs at the top of my blog.  I am working on Dear Jane in Civil war fabrics and Sylvia's Bridal Sampler is in 30's fabrics. I am excited about each quilt even though I know it will take a long time to complete each one.

I'm Stuffed!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving Day.  I enjoyed family and friends and then a nice quiet evening at home.  I think the pets had a great day as well.  Here's a cutie just laying around, kinda how Ricky and I felt last night.

Tuesday Treasure

Today, as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I want to share a poem with you as my Tuesday Treasure.  It was written by Helen Steiner Rice.  Her words have given hope, strength, courage and most of all a belief that faith in God will carry you through anything.  God bless!

  A Thankful Heart

Take nothing for granted, for whenever you do
The joy of enjoying is lessened for you,
For we rob our own lives much more than we know
When we fail to respond or in any way show,

Our thanks for the blessings that daily are ours
The warmth of the sun, the fragrance of flowers,
The beauty of twilight, the freshness of dawn,
The coolness of dew on a green velvet lawn,

The kind little deeds so thoughtfully done,
The favors of friends and the love that someone
Unselfishly gives us in a myriad of ways,
Expecting no payment and no words of praise.

Oh, great is our loss when we no longer find
A thankful response to things of this kind,

For the joy of enjoying and the fullness of living
Are found in the heart
that is filled with thanksgiving.

Rain, Rain, Rain

Woke up at 3am to thunder, lightning and rain.  Back to bed, after I let the cat back in and up at 6:30.   Check the weather report and it's going to be rain all day.

All the leaves are now off the trees and it looks depressing outside.  Not a horse or cow in sight.  They must be inside the barn.

I guess it's true that only ducks and geese like the rain because they are the only animals out in this mess.  Oh well, at least I'm inside, dry and getting ready to start my sewing for the day.  I took a short peek at all the blogs and I can tell that everyone has been busy with different projects.  I will have to get caught up on my reading tonight.  I have you all have a great day and I will check in tomorrow when I post my Tuesday Treasure.

Tuesday Treasure

Thanks to Melody for hosting Tuesday Treasure.  If you would like to join in you can find her by following the link or clicking on her button.  My treasure today is this board of cards and mini quilts I have received from wonderful people throughout the states and around the world.

Several years ago, I was involved in a postcard, ATC & mini quilt swap.  The themes changed from time to time and I can still remember how excited I was when I found a new card in the mail. I keep this up as an inspiration for me to continue to step outside the box and look at new ways of creating.  The robin and guitar are pieces that I have thread painted.

Front and Center

Wow! What a surprise for me, when I attended the reception at Gallery on the Square in Franklin Kentucky.  My painting, The Girl with the Pearl Earring, was in the window.

I was thrilled to see that someone had an appreciation for the work that I do.  Our group, Artists On Main Painting Society , have our paintings featured at the gallery for the month of November and December.  I also have Mona Lisa hanging in the gallery.  The reception was great, everyone was so nice and I had so much fun.  Before I left David, our art director, took a picture of me sitting in front of the store, so here I am for all to see.

What a great evening!

Clean Up and UFO's

Yesterday I picked up the recent Studios magazine and while reading the articles I realized I wasn't utilizing my shelf space.  This morning I started re-organizing and actually found extra space for storage.  Imagine that!

During the clean up phase I found my Double Delight quilt pieces.  If you're familiar with Bonnie Hunter, it was one of her mysteries in 2009.  I started the step one, got all the pieces cut, pieced about 1/4 of the sets and stopped.  I didn't like the cream colored print I was using and I was going to "rip" and cut new pieces but never did.

Well, today I picked out new fabric colors that I am very happy with and now have it added to my list to complete.  The dark color is chocolate brown.  I'm still using the blue squares I picked before.

I also pulled out my Dear Jane binder and Sylvia's Bridal Sampler Binder and added those to my list to start working on.  Dear Jane will be in the traditional Civil War fabrics (already have those picked and put aside)

and Sylvia's will be in, what I call, Flour Sack fabrics or Depression Era fabrics, what ever you want to call it.

I have to purchase some of those because I don't have enough to work with.  Now add 3 more quilts to my list of UFOs and I think I have enough on my plate.

Single Irish Chain

The other day I was looking for something in a quilt book for something, I can't remember what now, but I saw a Single Irish Chain pattern and thought that would be a great quilt to make.  I looked at my fabrics and immediately new what I wanted to use.  Here is the first block.

The solid fabric is navy blue, even though it looks black, and the print is a cream with a tiny blue design.  I think this one will be one of Ricky's favorites.  Last night he told me he was glad I made big quilts and that he liked them on the bed.  I'm still working on the Blue Ridge Beauty and getting ready for Bonnie's mystery so it looks like I will be a busy bee this fall and winter.

Tuesday Treasure

Today is Tuesday Treasure day and I'm sharing one of the first quilts I made.

The Dutch Doll pieces were found in my Grandmothers cedar chest.  They were left over from a quilt she had made.  I have this hanging on the wall in my studio.  Grandmother was born in 1900 and passed in 1981.  She taught me to crochet but I did not become interested in quilting until 1995.  I know she would be happy to know that the quilting tradition has been carried on in our family.

I started my Tuesday Treasure by reading Melody's blog The House on the Side of the Hill.  Melody lives in Australia and has a great blog.  Each Tuesday she posts and asks what your treasure is.  There is a way you can link your name and blog to hers so others can share.  If you would like to join in check out her site.  Thanks Melody for making this available to us.

Before and After

Today I thought I would share a little bit about the making of my studio.  Below is a picture of our home and to to side is a storage building.

This is the "BEFORE" picture.

This is the "AFTER" picture.

My sewing room was in the only room we have upstairs. After I quit working and really started to spend more time sewing, Ricky ask me if I would like to have a building of my own for my studio, which he calls a shop. I was thrilled with the idea, so we had a friend of ours who does remodeling work come out and take the old building down to the frame work and build my studio. Just a few steps from my back door and I'm ready to work or play.

Once you pass my studio you can walk on out to the barn and Ricky's shop.  The arbor in the picture is our blackberry vines.  We also have grape arbors and a few pecan trees in the yard.  Behind the house are the fields where the horses, a few of our cattle, emus, ducks and geese stay.  The rest of our cattle are in another piece of property that we have about 1/4 mile up the road.
We love our life here on R and K Farm and I know we will never live anywhere else.

Thread Painting

Friday I finished this piece, titled "Northern Cardinal".  The 2nd in a series of birds of the seasons.

The actual photo was taken by Dave Gigliotti,  a wonderful photographer from Harford Maryland.  I  was viewing web images and found his photo, which led me to his site Shuttermonkey.  I sent him an email requesting to use his photo for an oil painting and fiber art.  I was thrilled when he replied, yes & send me a picture so he could see my version.  Now, I'm starting on the painting, which will take a little longer than 2 days.  A big thank you goes out to Dave for giving his authorization to use his work.  If you're in the Harford Maryland area and need a photographer, by all means look at his work.

Mystery Quilt Fabric

Well, I've done it now, gone and joined another one of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilts at Quiltville.  I really need to use up some of this fabric that I have so I thought this would be a great time.  The mystery title is Orca Bay. This is the photo she has posted on her website.

This is the fabric that I have chosen.  Several years ago I purchased fabric from a quilt shop that was closing.  It was a great buy but now I need to put this to good use.  Bonnie is a scrap quilter and makes wonderful quilts.  I will be testing the blocks using different color layouts to see what I like best.  If your interested in reading more about Bonnie and her quilts pay her a visit.

Tuesday Treasure

Today I want to share my Tuesday Treasure with you.  They are a set of cups and saucers that have been in my family for years.  Each cup is 2" high and each saucer is 4" across.

They originally belonged to my Great-Aunt, Joe Kate Stone.  She was born July 28, 1882 and in my opinion, was a woman ahead of her time.

From the stories my mother told me, she loved to travel, plus she was a college professor of mathematics  in Arkansas and somewhere along the way she changed her name to Josephine.

The cups were given to my Grandmother, who was born in 1900, handed down to my mother and now I have them displayed on a shelf in my kitchen.  I have always wondered if someone gave them to Auntie Joe or if she purchased them somewhere during her travels.  I guess that part will always be a mystery.

What's On My Easel

I thought I would let you see what's on my easel.  It has been a while since I posted a picture of  any work in progress.  This is one I have worked on for several months.

I am now at the final stages of adding skin tones and hair color.  This is my first commissioned piece and I am very excited about finishing it and very grateful for the opportunity.  I have learned a tremendous amount about commission work and will value the experience as I move forward with my work in the future.

Angelic Looking?

The other day I was going back into my studio when I noticed this little moth just sitting, I guess hanging on the vinyl siding.  I was so impressed with the design of its body that I had to take a picture.

Now, I don't know about you, but to me, it looks like a angel in the center with the outline of a darker grey  to define it.  I have seen a lot of moths in my day but never one that stopped me in my tracks.  I tried to get a closer shot but, the closer I got the more it blurred into the white background.  Anyway this is on my list for an art quilt and a canvas painting.  I've got to start a book to keep up with all I want to do.

I Saved My Yarn

One day this week I woke up, poured a cup of coffee, went into the living room ready for a peaceful morning when I notice strands of my knitting yarn laying on the stairs.  Well, of course I had to follow to see where it ended up.  Cotton, our 3 month old cat, had taken it out of my bag, carried it up stairs and wrapped it around the railing, not once but twice.  I knew then I would have to find something else to keep my yarn in.  The other day I found it at Tuesday Morning.  I love that store!

It's the cutest storage box I have seen in a while.  Now I can keep my yarns out of Cottons paws.

I don't have all my yarn in it, only what I'm working with at the time. The rest I keep in my cottage, but this holds everything I need and the fun yarn can be pulled out with the top closed. This is the best find I have made in a long time. If your not familiar with Tuesday Morning, check out their website where you can find a store near you or shop online. Tuesday Morning

Memory Quilt Finished

I have finished Mom's quilt. I put the binding on it today and plan on running it through the wash to soften it up a little.   Next on the list is to finish one of Bonnie Hunter's quilts that I have been working on for too long now.  This is part of the blocks.

I finished the half sq triangles today.  Now, I've got to press all some of the 4 patches and most of the half sqs.   Then it's sewing the blocks together.  I am determined to get this one done, the sooner the better.

Tobacco Barns are Smokin'

It's that time of year here in Tennessee and the tobacco barns are smokin'.  I have grown up with the smells of tobacco in the fall and I never tire of it even though it plays havoc head (allergies).  I wanted to share a photo that was taken last year.  This is one of our barns.  We don't raise any tobacco but we do let a neighbor use our barn.

I have plans of using this photo for a painting.  It speaks of life here in the country.

Renewing Friendships

Today was a great day for me.  After painting at the studio I had lunch with a dear special friend of mine that I have not seen in years.  It was like the time between us just dissappeared.  We ate, laughed, cried, hugged and talked alot.  Our visit was something I will treasure for a long time.  She is such a joy to be around and I know that we will continue to stay in touch.  If you have someone that you haven't seen or talked to in a long time and you know how to get in touch with them, take that time and make that contact.  Maybe you will be blessed like I was today.

It's Working!!!

Thank God, my washer is back in service!  I never thought the sound of water being pumped out of the washer would be music to my ears, but today it was.  As Ricky always says, nothing that 2 or 3 hundred dollars won't fix.  I guess it's better than buying a new one.

I have mom's quilt on the frame and I'm getting ready to start the quilting.  I also have the first coat of paint on my miniature gallery.

I still have touch up work to do but I like it so far.  So, all in all today was a good day.  How was yours?

Beautiful Morning!

This morning has just been wonderful, not to hot, not to cold.  My windows are up and the freshness of fall is stirring.  I think the horses even like today.  Here's a picture I made a few months back.

Now, as far as inside goes, my laundry is still sitting, waiting for the nice repair man to come.  I told Ricky this morning that I think I will have to go to the "Wishy Washy" this afternoon if he doesn't come.  I can't remember the last time I was in one of those places.  It's just amazing how much 2 people can mess up in just 3 days.

Moms Memory Quilt

A while back I posted a pic of Moms quilt. I have finished piecing it, after adding another row.  Now to get it quilted.

She really liked it, but it was just a little to short for her bed.  The photos were transfered to muslin by my good friend Susan Dietsch at Designs For You, http://www.tees4u.biz/  in Pleasant View TN.  It is a great place to get anything embroidered, plus they have this new printer that is a "hoss" when it comes to pictures on shirts They have over 10,000 embroidery designs to choose from or they will digitize a design for you.

Surprise! Surprise!

I came in from my studio, for lunch, and found my washer on the "fritz".  Ricky came in and we emptied the water, cleaned it out and he said to start it again, so I did, but it's not pulling the water out!  God love him, he left saying what a great job he had done, but I'm here with wet clothes and a washer that won't work.  So goes the days of my life at R and K Farm.

I'll just head back to my studio and as Scarlett would say, I'll think about it tomorrow, or later when Ricky gets back home.

Sometimes You Win!

Boy was I the lucky one today!  I went in to Hancock's to buy a dress pattern and noticed they had their fleece on sale for $3.99 yd.  Every year I make baby blankets for the local hospital and normally buy my fleece in November, but today I saved a bundle ($115) on my purchase.

Getting Mixed Up!

As I begin another week of painting, quilting, etc. I thought it would be nice to share this photo with you.

If things seem to get mixed up, just stop and take a break.  That's what Cotton did one morning while I was cleaning out some cabinets.  He looks so sweet but believe me, he can be a little terror!  I hope to finish my mother's memory quilt this week and work on my miniature art gallery.  What are your plans for the week?

Home, Heart and Memories!

Our grand-daughter, Abby who is 9, is with us for a few days and she was talking about the possibility of her mom getting married.  She was a little upset because she did not want to leave the home where she grew up.  I told her that home is where the heart is and that where ever her mom and her live, it would be home.  We also talked about making memories and moving forward.

This morning, I thought about our conversation while I was cleaning my grandmother's pan.

I use the bottom of this pan, everyday, to make tea. It made many a pie filling in its day, when Grandmother used it.  I also use the nesting bowls that were hers.  I know it's hard to leave things behind, but in some ways we can keep those memories with us.  What about you, do you have items that you use that "stir up" memories each time you use them?

Memory Quilt for Mom

Yesterday I visited Mom at the Nursing Home and she spent most of the time telling me about her dreams.  Lately they have been about her when she was a little girl.  I really enjoyed listening to her talk as if it happened the day before.  There are times though, I feel she is slipping away from me and then other days she seems to be fine.

Today I pieced this memory quilt for her so she will be able to remember her family and see them even when she is alone.  I wanted it to be small enough for her to be able to look at each picture.  Now to get it backed with a piece of lightweight fleece.  I'm on my way now to see her and I'm taking this with me. Have a great evening.

My Credo and Art + Quilt

While attending the annual Tomato Festival, a few months back,  in Nashville, I found this wonderful credo.  I have it hanging above the fireplace in our living room.  I thought I would share this with you because my daughter & good friend Jana said "yes that's you all right."

This was created by April Stewart of Frankiln, TN and she has a great website http://mypersonalcredo.com where you can see & purchase her work.  You can also create your own credo.

Today, while I was reading I thought about how true this is.  I was in my favorite chair, with a good cup of coffee and a good book.  What I was reading was Lyric Kinard's book Art + Quilt.  She creates some fantastic art quilts.  Check out her web site http://www.lyrickinard.com to see some of her work.  She also has a blog  http://lyrickinard.blogspot.com where she has guest quilters and artists that share their work. If you get time check out these sites, especially if you like eye candy.

Until next time, have a wonderful day and remember, Life is a journey, roll down the window and enjoy the breeze!  Kathleen

New Blogs I Found!

This morning I was updating my blog list and just looking around I found 2 new sites, thanks to Maggie R. at Magpies.   From her site I found Gayle Page-Robak's site, A Stampers Touch.  I sometimes dabble in making cards. Anyway, looking at Gayle's site I found this one, Whimsical Musings.  Cindy is having a free "Blogging 101" Seminar on her site. I think I'll try that Blog Button she was talking about.  Thanks to all who share your favorite blogs. You never know who is strolling through.
